When you first hear the word ‘Hypnobirthing’, it is common to think what on earth is this? It sounds ‘hippy-ish’ … Mmm I’m not sure I want to be hypnotised during birth … I’m not sure how I feel telling my Midwife I am considering Hypnobirthing … Will they understand? Will they think I’m silly?
These are absolutely normal feelings and if I’m honest is exactly thoughts that crossed my mind I came across the word a few years back.
HOW WRONG COULD I BE?
In my own experience, my midwife at my antenatal appointments was fantastic, and as soon as I mentioned I was taking a Hypnobirthing course, her words were ‘Oh great! I have heard SO many stories of Hypnobirthing labours’ – BINGO! I was delighted, I had a midwife’s support. When it came to the birth of my Son, I had 2 midwives (as one was a student midwife), and they were equally as supportive. My partner told them that we were Hypnobirthing and they couldn’t have been better! They kept conversation to a minimum, didn’t pester me into repeated vaginal examinations, didn’t coach me to ‘pushhhhh’ and just let my body do it’s thing! I hardly knew my Midwives were in the room most of the time! (Other than the giggles we had between surges about me looking forward to reaching my legs again to shave once baby was here!)
After the birth their comments were ‘That was the most relaxed first-time birth I’ve seen! You did it so easily!’
It is amazing to see that so many midwives are in support of the incredible KG Hypnobirthing and many are actually training on the course themselves!
